MIKE FLAGS
ART OR ADVERTISING?

Having been making mic flags for over 20 years we have seen a lot of mic flag artwork.  Some of this microfon flag art has been extremely legible at a distance.  Some mic flag art is a waste of money as far as the advertising benefit of your microphone flags is concerned.  Some mic flags might as well be blank mic flags for all the good they do.

You have to decide whether your microphone flags are to be artsy, or be readable when you get your mic flag on TV or in a newspaper shot.   For most stations the purpose of a microfon flag is to let people know you are there.  If your mic flag is illegible, it is a waste of your mic flag budget.

Look at the microphone flag art below.  The mic flag art on the left is very artsy when you are close to it.  But, the important part about this microfon flag art is that it is recognizable as a KIRO mic flag even when you are a at distance from it.  Their mic flag art satisfies both ends of the scale.  It is a microphone flag with art AND advertising value.  The mic flag art on the right is extremely artsy when you are within a couple of feet of the microphone flag itself.  However, if you were to see this mic flag in a TV shot or a newspaper picture, this microfon flag would just be a blob of color.  Or, if you were in a crowd at an event and were more than five feet back, this mic flag would be completely illegible.

Back away from your computer and look at the two mic flags and you will see what we mean.  The KIRO microphone flag continues to advertise for them, the other mic flag just goes away as far as being advertising.

If you want your microphone flag to be nothing but art, that's OK.  However, if you want your mic flag to be advertising for your station, you might want to do this little microphone flag test.  We suggest that, before deciding on your mic flag art, you print it out actual mic flag size (2 ½ to 3 ½ inches wide) and move away from it.  See if your mic flag will identify your station at a distance.  Remember that Joe Public doesn't know your mic flag art from any of the other stations.  He has to be able to identify your station with that particular microphone flag.
